South West Boise
Southwest Boiseans have fought hard to keep
the urban sprawl away. They like their wide
open spaces -- pastureland dotted occasionally
with houses, subdivisions where homes haven't
been put in with shoehorns. But in 1998, the
neighborhood began to feel the impact of faster
growth, with 185 new homes sold.
Students in the neighborhood attend schools
in one of two school districts - Boise School
District or Meridian School District.
The rural mindset of the neighborhood also
has led to the concentration of retail development
along the neighborhood's northern edge - most
of it on Overland Road, just south of Interstate
84. Other than the Boise Municipal Airport,
which sits in Southwest Boise, the northern-edge
retail development is the only portion of Southwest
Boise served by Boise Urban Stages, the public
bus system.
The neighborhood also is served by small retail
centers such as those at Lake Hazel and South
Five Mile roads and at Indian Lakes on South
Cole Road.
No city parks have been developed in Southwest
Boise, in part because most of the area is outside
city limits. Boise's Parks and Recreation Department
is planning for the future, though, and owns
several park sites including a 163-acre site
that would be Boise's largest park.
